A heated political environment is growing between America and Canada since US President-elect Donald Trump eluded that Canada is better being the 51st state of America. According to elected President Trump, ” If Canada merged with America, there would not be tariffs and there would go down the taxes and totally secure from the threat of the Russian and Chinese ships that are constantly surrounding them “.
Even though most Canadian politicians are saying that DT’s remark is trolling, the remark is still very political and smart if anyone would really analyze the political threat ahead from Russia and China. In the near future, if Russia and China form the BRICS organization in which the US Dollar would not be used for monetary exchanges among them, That could really impact the Canadian economy, despite the fact that they see DT’S tariffs as a pending threat for their economy. It is true that 77% of Canadian production is exported to America and nearly 4.5 billion dollars worth of goods and services cross the American border every day. As well as 60% of crude oil import to America from Canada and 85% of electricity. So what does it mean? It means that America and Canada are already merged with each other economically. It is very conspicuous that they badly need each other. In the word of the Canadian deputy Prime Minister “we need them and they also need us”. So we should consider the newly elected President’s comment under these circumstances.
If we go back to history, the concept of the annexation of America and Canada has been around for centuries. When early American leaders invaded Quebec during the American revolution the concept was also there. In 1812 the US tried to invade Canada during the war. Even during the second World War Canada was an ally of America and fought with them against Germans. That means even historically, Canada and America worked together when they had common threats. By now, there is another political plus economy threat and both countries should face it together for the better future for both.
In Panama Canal’s case, it is apparent that the US elected President DT’s idea is more pragmatic. Once France gave up the construction of Panama Canal in 1889 due to the lack of confidence of investors and the high mortality of workers, America took over the construction project in 1904 and America was able to open it to the service in 1914. There are about 13,000 vessels annually passing through the Panama Canal now and the control of Panama Canal is hanging in uncertainty between Chania and Panama’s governments. There is no certainty of control of Panama Canal for US ships in the future if the government of Panama continues the deal with China. It could negatively affect US ships if the control of the Panama Canal comes to the hand of China. America used to control the Panama Canal according to Torrijos-Carter Treaties and it was handed over to Panama in 1977. The other thing is, compared to other countries in the region, Panama Republic has the largest Chinese community which is over 200,000. That could be one reason for China to say that China has the right to look after Panama Canal.
Under these circumstances, it is very important to look in to what Donald Trump has said recently about the Panama Canal issue as well Canada. It could be trolling to the Canadian politician at the moment, but it could be a matter of time until we truly understand Donald Trump’s remark.
